Are You Buying Essential Oils Infused With Spiritual Danger?
I first became aware of the spiritual dangers of essential oils, the spiritual dangers of aromatherapy, when I began researching essential oils and aromatherapy back in the early 90’s. Since there wasn’t an internet at that time, I went to my local library to do my research.
It was there I first encountered some uses for essential oils that made me extremely uncomfortable in my spirit. These books were advocating using the essential oils in magical (or magickal) formulas and spells, and for practices straight out of New Age and Eastern religion handbooks.
In those days, essential oils were not well-known, especially here in the United States, but today you cannot be on Facebook, doing searches for natural healing, natural remedies, or even attend some church socials without hearing about the benefits of essential oils.
One brand of essential oils, sold by a multi-level marketing company out of Utah has gained a large following among
Christians.
It is for them that I felt I had to issue this warning: Know the spiritual dangers of essential oils before you get
caught up in something that could involve you in practices that are based in witchcraft.
Not only do those practices oppose the very Word of God, but they could open you up to spiritual forces that are anything but Godly.
How to Identify the Spiritual Dangers of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy
You can get together with a bunch of Christians and you’ll pick up on a few buzzwords, like: “blessed”, “grace”, “highly favored”,
“overcomer”, “trusting God” “standing on the promises”, “living by faith”, “peace”, “joy”, “healing”, “liberty”, “deliverance”,
“forgiveness”, “give thanks”, “praise”, “healing”, etc., etc.
Well, certain buzzwords are being used to sell essential oils to,
and by Christians, that have their roots in very ungodly ground.
These buzzwords are:
- Grounding
- Cleansing
- Balancing
- Harmony
- Centering
- Purifying
- Enabling gratitude or thanks
- Grief
- Enlightenment
- Chakra
- Magnetic energy
- Aligning
- Regenerating the mind
- Spiritual practice
- Meditative effect
- Spiritual awakening
- Vibrations
- Life force
- Living energy
- Intent energy
- Chi
I can just hear some of you now saying things like, “well, I don’t use them for that! I just use them for the physical benefits!”
I agree with that. I also don’t use them for their “spiritual” benefits. However, I’m also very careful about where I buy my oils.
I really try to avoid buying my essential oils from a company that uses such buzzwords in their marketing materials.
I also made a point of not using such catch phrases or buzzwords when describing the uses for any of the essential oils featured on this website.
The Spiritual Dangers of Essential Oils for Unaware Christians
Earlier I mentioned a certain brand of essential oils sold by a
multi-level marketing plan with a sales force of independent
distributors that seems to have specially targeted Christians. While other essential oil companies also promote essential oils for spiritual purposes, the one in particular that is being sold by so many
Bible-believing Christians is Young Living essential oils.

The problem comes when these Christians (usually women) parrot the marketing materials using those very same buzzwords and catch phrases
used in New Age, Wicca, and in Eastern religions. They do not realize the danger they are in by promoting these oils for practices that
are diametrically opposed to the Word.
Examples of These Buzzwords from Young Living’s Own Website
About Essential Oils – “While some essential
oils may uplift the spirits, others may empower you to release negative thoughts and habits. Essential oils can be your key to a more
fulfilling and balanced emotional life.” Then the site goes on to recommend certain oils.

By the way, I did check doTERRA's website to see if they also used any of those buzzwords to describe the uses and benefits of their essential oils and blends. While I still don't like their prices, I was pleased to see...or not see...any of those words or descriptions being used. 11/13/14
Spiritual Dangers of Essential Oils: Marketing to Christians By Outright Lies
Young Living and other companies teach that essential oils have been around since before Biblical times, trying to legitimize the use of essential oils for all purposes. After all, most people have heard the story of the three wise men coming to see Baby Jesus and bringing Him gifts of frankincense and myrrh.
However, since the process of steam distillation, which is used to turn the frankincense resin into an essential oil, wasn’t invented until about 900 years after Jesus died, essential oils as we know them were not used in Biblical times.
The depth of the deception perpetrated by Young Living in marketing their essential oils to Christians goes way beyond what I can cover in this article. For an in-depth look at the problem with Young Living’s philosophy for Christians, I highly recommend you read the article “Aromatherapy: Biblical Path to Healing or Demonic Deception?” by Chuck & Julie Cohen
Here are just a few quotes from that article:
- Gary Young believes psychic powers to be a gift. He discusses on page 38 of his book, Aromatherapy: The Essential Beginnings,
that “those who are gifted with psychic abilities” are among those who have “higher brain frequencies.”
- When you apply an intent-energized oil on your feet, it can saturate your cells within 60 seconds,…
- Later through the dream realized they were six of the religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism,
and Islam. They all merged into one caravan to forge a better future for the world’s children.
- The essential oils that I recommend for the fire chakra are peppermint, ginger, lemon, Transformation™, Purification®,
Live with Passion™, and En-R-Gee™
Now, I may not agree with the authors’ stance on the spiritual dangers of essential oils and aromatherapy in all applications, except
cosmetics, perfumes and cleaning. Their stance is that all healing should be sought through the Word of God, without resorting to essential
oils that have their roots in ungodly practices.
Spiritual Dangers of Essential Oils: Using Essential Oils as Medicine
While ideally we want to be able to claim and obtain miraculous healing
for our bodies, minds and spirits through the Blood of Jesus,
I don’t find anything in the Bible that says seeking medical help is
sinful.
One can go too far in the other direction in an attempt
to avoid the spiritual dangers of essential oils. But the oils
distilled from plants are not the problem, the problem is with the way
they are used and promoted for use.
Herbal medicine has been around since the beginning of time, and not only did God create the plants for food (Genesis 1:12, 29), but also for medicine:
Eze 47:12 And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
So medicine wasn’t spoken of as evil in the Word, but actually something good:
Pro 17:22 A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Most people are not in a place in their Christian walk where they have the faith to claim healing through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Rather than suffering needlessly, most have no problem taking advantage of the abundance of medical care and knowledge available in
this day and age to relieve their suffering and restore them to health.
I don’t believe God is going to condemn any Believer who seeks out medical help for physical ailments. But I do believe He might not
approve if we seek spiritual healing from anything or anyone other than Him.
Don’t take my word for it. I use essential oils. I just avoid those that are marketed for purposes that I consider spiritually
questionable. What you do is up to you. I would just urge you to get into the Word and seek the Lord for what He would have you
do.
If after seeking the Lord, you still feel it is okay to give your money to a company that promotes the spiritual dangers of essential oils,
then continue to buy and use Young Living essential oils.
If you would like to not use Young Living essential oils, but are afraid to use other oils because you’ve been told all other oils are
inferior, diluted or otherwise bad…just consider the source of that lie.
